Wimmin by Womyn who love Wymin

open / Saturday January 21 – 6-8pm
close / March 4

Harvey Levine Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition
“Wimmin by Womyn who love Wymin,” a photographic endeavor by artists Eve Fowler and A.L. Steiner, as they examine the specificity of their desire among a similar pool of models.

Artists Eve Fowler and A.L. Steiner processed through their lesbian tendencies and obsession with iconic imagery with a feminist photo challenge to each other: to photograph the same models, each incorporating their intensely personal and inescapable artistic perspectives. This lesbionic challenge soon became an intense competition, turning both their insides out as each saw the transformative results of their photography upon these women and transfolk, as well as their relative jealousy of each other’s genres— large-format vs. snapshot porntraiture™. As lesbians are prone to do, this competition then turned to months of overly emotional self-reflexive analysis of their respective creative insecurities and personal failings. Eventually, however, they found their strengths through a dissection of their weaknesses, both physical and artistic. It is still unknown who slept with whom and whether they resorted to misogynist behavior and stereotypical constructs to obtain the images on display in their upcoming exhibition Wimmin by Womyn who love Wymin, but the resulting imagery is a proof that no two artists, subjects or images are alike.

PROJECT ROOM | Cut by Matt Lipps
A collection of sculptures and photographs by LA-based artist Matt Lipps, as he continues his exploration of surface and depth; death and desire; photography and vision found in the penetrating imagery of pre-AIDS gay porn.
